Compatibility
MonitorControl works with most modern LCD displays from major manufacturers using DDC/CI protocol via USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI or VGA connections. It also supports Apple displays, built-in displays, and provides software alternatives for devices without DDC implementation.
macOS Compatibility:
- v4.3.2+: macOS Sequoia (15)
- v4.0.0: macOS Catalina 10.15 (with limitations)
- v3.1.1: macOS Mojave 10.14
- v2.1.0: macOS Sierra 10.12
Installation
The application can be installed by:
- Downloading the latest .dmg file from GitHub Releases
- Using Homebrew:
brew install --cask monitorcontrol
After installation, simply copy the app to your Applications folder and launch it. For keyboard control functionality, you'll need to grant Accessibility permissions when prompted.
Notable Limitations
- DDC control is not supported on built-in HDMI ports of 2018 Intel Mac mini, all M1 Macs, and entry-level M2 Mac mini
- Some displays like EIZO use alternative protocols and only support software dimming
- DisplayLink connections only support software dimming
For users of f.lux or BetterDisplay, certain settings adjustments are recommended to avoid conflicts with gamma table manipulation.
MonitorControl offers professional-grade display management capabilities in a free, open-source package that seamlessly integrates with macOS.
